We did raise some meat hogs...here is what I have learned (even in vet/agricult school).
Pigs DO eat meat, cooked or uncooked, it didn't matter to them. If you want to play the odds a little better, cook them up.
We fed them table scraps, bones and all.
When we butchered our chickens and rabbits, we tossed the innards in the pen...all gone!
When we casterated the pigs, we tossed the testes in the pen....all gone!
When they got a little pushy in the pen with us, we always carry a shovel or a wooden handle stick, smack them smartly and quickly a few times on the snout, they will back off....they are pretty intelligent. If they decided to nibble our boots, they would get a swift kick.
Do not mess with momma with her piglets unless you take her down first. (for vaccinations or casterations or care).
Do NOT name the pigs that intend for slaughter.
It is often we heard stories about people being eaten up by pigs Want Mythbusters to try that?
Hubby said back home, it was more often than not, someone would get hurt. He had worked for a neighbor who has a hog farm. don't say it never happens, but it does.
I agree, pigs are dangerous...they weigh alot more than you do at near market weight.
One rule I remember my father told me when we take care of the pigs when he had to go to school..........Never, ever go down to their level, no matter how urgent it is...use your shovel or stick to move things or move the pigs to another pen.
