I can't remember if I saw it somewhere else already, but an idea occurred to me and I've been googling around to see if it's something others have done successfully. Unfortunately I can't find anything.
The idea is to create a closed half tunnel using some wire fencing material or chicken wire folded over and growing chicken fodder in it (e.g. oats, barley, various greens, etc). The tunnel would be small enough (maybe 2 ft in diameter) to allow chickens to peck at the greenery inside through the fencing, but large enough that they couldn't peck at the base of the plants or scratch at the roots.
Basically it's a chicken tunnel, except the chickens don't go in it -- only the plants do.
Ideally, the grains and greens would grow and fill out the tunnel, while the chickens snack away on the perimeter. Eventually the plants would go to seed and it would perpetuate itself.
It just seemed like a cool idea to me. Not sure if it could work in practice though.
Anyone try anything like this before? Or do you know a google-able term I can use to look up more on it?
