help me with my chick!! please! gender and breed.

Certain colors And breeds of chicken When bred together the male and female chicks hatch out different colors, so you know as soon as they hatch which is which Based on their color.

I get a little freaked out when I imagine truckloads of live baby roosters being dumped into landfills..maybe they use them to make dog and cat food? If not they should. Surely they do something with them so it isn't just a huge waste of life.

Ive read there not good for breeding. Also that they lay alot to start but production drops of faster then heritage bird.Havent noticed anything with my comets but there just over a year old.

Yeah especially with people staving out there.Theres land to free range them that could be used to feed the less fortunate.

I never keep my laying hens for too long. Not with any plan in mind. I just alwawelend up with too many chickens to feed over winter so I sell young birds and start again the next season. I have no idea how long they lay, Or if they stop sooner. I've always gotten a few in spring and they lay really well, but like I said I never keep them long.

I have a base knowledge of them trying to get more into pure strains even though the americana roo I had breed good.Switching to Delewares an buff orpingtons welsummers and barred rocks hoping for meat from the rocks and deleware and eggs from the other 2.Also doing buff brahma.

Yeah I hear you still got my first hens from last summer got eggs in winter though even with our bad ohio winter.Didnt loose a chicken surprisingly but did loose my 2 turkeys got to cold and they got sick fast.

I ended up keeping 4 hens and 4 roosters from last year, one of those hens was from the year before last. I wanted to keep more but I made a listing on Craigslist and people would show up and buy a lot of chickens at once and I have a hard time turning down money and before I knew it I was nearly out of chickens.
