Help me with the breed mix. It is 1/2 silkie

That is fine. I love chatting about chickens.

I don't think it will hurt them, but it have read that they need the extra nutrition of layer pellets to lay consistently.

We leave a light on in winter and they lay all year.

Thank you queeniechick, yep, I also love talking about chickens to people who understand just what a pleasure they are :)

As long as they are healthy, I am not worried about the number of eggs .. most get scrambled or boiled and fed back to them anyway

I am also grateful for the consensus that Tina is a pullet. She was hatched here and after raising her and loving her for 9 months I would be heartbroken if she had to be found a new home. 7 from 9 hatched and 5 were obviously boys. I kept Tina and Suzi as I thought they may be girls. Sadly, Suzi, at 5 months of age was fine when she went to bed one night and extremely ill the next morning, passing away within two hours of sun up

I believe she ate something or was bitten by something on the afternoon free range; I have lost a couple of girls over the years but never anything so quick and for no 'obvious' reason. So, anyway, Tina is the only one I have left from my first hatch so I am very attached to her

So, sorry you lost one. I have lost a couple and it is heart wrenching. My boss at work laughed at me because I was so sad. People that don't own chickens just don't get it.

Wow, hatching my own... that is something that I haven't done yet. Next Spring I am going to try to mate my newest silkie and let her hatch. Here she is.

Oh yeah, it is very sad when we lose one .. the morning I lost Suzi I went into work but I was so upset and in danger of snapping at one of the clients, I went home again! Luckily, while not a chicken person, my boss is very understanding and knows that my pets mean the world to me.

I have had two hatches here from shipped eggs .. they are the most wonderful experience and I love giving my girls chance to become a mumma. My Bantam Cochin, Cilla, has had the two hatches and I am hoping that someone else becomes broody before her so that they can have a chance to be a mumma also. I know I will give in to her as soon as she becomes broody :)

I so recommend giving a broody chance to become a mumma, it is just so beautiful to see her with both the eggs and bubbies
