I am a new duck mother. We have six Pekin ducks and I'm not exactly sure how many males or how many females. We keep our ducks in a large pond behind our house. I have noticed the ducks mating but I have not seen any eggs yet. We had to put the ducks up in the barn for 2 to 3 days because we are treating our pond for duckweed. While the ducks were in the barn I noticed one duck acting very strange and I saw something hanging out of it's behind. What is it? What should I do?

What do you mean by acting strangely? Like limping not eating or what?

I don't know if it's a male or female. It has been eating or drinking, but it will not lay down! It only sleeps standing up while the others are laying down. There is one other duck that is acting very protective over it and won't let it go near any of the other ducks or won't let the other Ducks near it. It's always by itself. I feel so bad for it!! What do I do? I thought it was a penis at first but it's not going back in. I also thought maybe it was a female getting ready to lay eggs but I don't know? I was thinking it could be ready to lay eggs becAuse the one is acting so protective!!

It is possible that it is a drake and he just got himself hurt. Or (I know this happens to mallards which is what I raise I don't know if other breeds do this) after mating season the males 'item' actually falls off and regrows for the next season, sounds weird but it happens. So that could be whats happening here, but I'd still recommend taking it to the vet just to be safe.

Looks like a penis to me and sound like it is prolapse. You may want to try searching the board for it because I remember seeing a post a while ago about how to treat it. I believe the key to keeping it moist so it does retract.

A ducks penis does not "fall off". It regress in size after mating season but never does it actually fall off.

He could have gotten himself hurt. I don't normally have them in a kiddy pool. They are normally in the pond, but because we are treatingn the pond, I hado put them
In the barn. He could have hurt himself getting out of the kiddy pool?? I don't know........ Why is the other duck acting so protective of him and not letting any of the other ducks near him/her?

I apologies if I'm wrong, I got this info on a mallard duck website it may just apply to mallards or I read it incorrectly or it was just wrong. I'm sorry if I gave false information.

It seems to be a pretty big misconception and I was told it too when I first started with ducks. Duck anatomy is quite interesting if you ever get a change to look it up.
