hi, I keep my coop rather clean, but today I found my poor faverolle on the ground(in the coop), barely moving. When I checked her stomach/vent it was absolutely infested with mites, they were everywhere. It was disgusting.
i'll give a little history on this chicken first.
we bought this hen at 4 months of age from a lady on craigslist, the seller was a chicken hoarder as the living spaces of these poor birds were terrible, but that's beside the point. Silly me forgot to check the chickens I bought for lice, I introduced them to the flock. (I bought these chickens about 2-3 months ago
anyways, I took her inside and fed her some egg and wet chick food. I decided the best way to ease her pain was to give her a warm bath (to get rid of most of the mites). She's much better now, her comb is much redder than before, too.
I know many will say to use DE. DE has never worked for me, I've tried but it seems to fail every time. I dusted this hen before vigorously for 2 weeks straight, but the mites came back. It's almost summer, and I know for a fact that's when mites return. Should I confine her for a couple of days or just release her back into the flock? What should I do with the other chickens?? Is lice shampoo okay to use on chickens, it's my last resort now since de never works. Also, yes, I do have a dust bathing area, but it's been raining nonstop for the past 3 weeks and my chickens haven't had a chance to bathe.
Any ideas on what to do would be greatly appreciated
