I went out to give the ducks treats and stuff this morning and i noticed Nibbles behind looked pink. I picked her up and it looks like her rectum has come out some? like maybe she laid a monster egg or something..she usually lays big eggs, bigger than the other girls anyway. It has been getting pretty cold lately & the pen was a little mucky, i just cleaned it today.

It pretty much looks like a donut. I pushed gently around it and she sat still so it doesnt seem too painful, but i know it cant be comfortable.

what could cause this?
How can i fix it?

ETA: there is no discharge or anything, her butt was just dirty.

some think that prolapsed rectums are caused by the weakening of the muscles around the rectum and causes it to fall out. this could be because of straining or maybe aging. im pretty sure you can just push it back in there

She is only about 3 years old so it couldnt be from age, i dont think.

Should i let her take a warm bath before i try to do that?

Should I seperate her into a dark area to try and keep her from laying again?

I used to have a snake who would get a prolapsed colon.

Here is what I did:

let her swim in warmish water for a bit, that helps clean the area.

Get some K-Y lubricant jelly (often found near the condoms, if you have never looked for it - it is a, uhm, personal lubricant)

dab the jelly around the prolapse and about two inches of a rectal thermometer or similar very clean, smooth instrument.

G E N T L Y use the thermometer to reinsert the prolapse, and very lightly touch the area to try to help the tissue get back into place.

Give frequent opportunities for swimming and other exercise.

In my snake's case, I was overfeeding her. Your duck may have had a problem laying.

I hope this may give you an idea for treating this.

most definately be sure you let her soak it first and i would watch her... we had a cow prolapse twice and my mother a nursing home nurse has her patients have prolapsed rectums all of the time and she has to re-place them a couple times a month so i would watch her. like i said its probably the muscles around the vent that are weak from laying oversized eggs.

I let her stay in the bath for about 10 minutes..i put Frog in with her so she would stay (Frog is still a baby). After i let her dry off for a few minutes i used some Petroleum jelly and it went back in pretty easily. after i got it half way the rest pulled back in.

The muscle seemed to be tight still but maybe she just couldnt get it back in after it came out?

I am going to check on her again in the morning since they lay early in the morning.

I also noticed she had a small scab-looking thing and after i removed it with the jelly it was just a tiny little bruise looking spot. I think it should heal fine, better on the inside that the out anyway.
