1/2" hardware cloth should have been used instead of poultry wire - too late now!!

I'd be willing to bet that you are dealing with a mink rather than muskrats. Both live in similar environments, but one is a vegetarian while the other is a carnivore.

We are having the same problem!Muskrats do not just eat plants they do kill chickens we are trying to trap it right now but remember they are protected so you have to release them quite far from your chicken coop miles in fact!
