In the words of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ - "It is finished" After reading and considering all the thoughtful advice of ALL you kind people, and after initial treatment attempts followed by close observation,I determined that the best thing for Goldie was to put her out of her considerable misery. It was swift (axe) but not as hard as I initially dreaded it would be.In my initial post I was very emotional, but you guys caused me to carefully consider my options in a more measured, deliberate, and non-emotional way.(Thank you all for that) So I " farmered-up " told her she was a good chicken, privately and verbally recounted briefly the things that made her special to me,then did the deed. She will join past pets in our small Pet Cemetary.(See, I'm getting emotional again)The rooster now occupies the isolation cage and will be monitored closely from now on.
Your advice from other chicken people was just what I needed.THANKS AGAIN!
I will unsubscribe from this topic some time Sunday.
I lost birds today. Tough. One had to be dispatched as well, but I couldn't do it. I feel bad as I read this thread, it looks like a vet could have saved her, so maybe I should have tried. It's over. Had I been left to do it, I'm such a wimp, all I could do would be to put her in a bag in the freezer and let her "fall asleep! (I know, I know, I know!)
I had a neighbor who had a rooster like that. He'd have sex with one hen and then beat up on another. One time he beat up a hen real bad so she crated him for a week. Then she made the mistake of giving him another chance. Everything was fine for a day or two and then he attacked that hen again. This time she lost an eye. My neighbor said she wasn't going to put up with that $@&t and took him straight over to the zoo to you (as a food donation for the lions and tigers). The sick thing is, a rooster can do an awful lot of damage real quick. And when they're serious, they always go for the eyes. I've seen it happen between roosters. They're seriously going in for the kill when that happens and they won't stop until the deed's done or they're completely separated.
