HELP - mustard did NOT deter my egg eaters!!!

I only have 3 hens and the other day I went out to see them all chowing down on an egg. So I put mustard in one and put it in their nest box. (Read that on BYC). That night it was broken open. I cleaned it up and thought that would be a lesson to them. Well, they have other plans!! Or they are just really addicted to their eggs. Guess what - so are we!!

Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't know if separating them will help but I don't have place to separate one, let alone two.

Have you tried putting golf balls (or fake eggs) in their coop???

12304 - did you suggest golf balls in another thread? I read it earlier and ran out and put three in their nest box! I'll check in the morning to see if that worked.

Well i did not suggest it but i had a question about egg eating and someone suggested it to me. I put some in my coop too, hope it works for both of us!!!! Good luck

early egg removal is a plus the other thing is what shape are the eggs in before they eat them. Softer thin eggs get eaten some times. Are you giving them oyster shell as a free supplement? Mine were eating some eggs until I gave them oyster shell but I will repeat early removal is best, the longer that eggs are in the longer they can attack them.
ps it has been over 6 months and no egg eating

3 NH reds - thanks for the suggestion. I did put some oyster shell down yesterday, thinking they were needing calcium. I will put out a bowl of it today. I leave for work at 7 and don't get home until 6. My husband checks when he is home, but getting them as soon as they lay is not always an option. I do love picking up a warm egg though, that I got to do this morning!! The eggs that we have eaten seem to have strong shells. I did not really examine the shells of the ones they ate. Sometimes there were no shells left!

I put 3 golf balls in their nest boxes last night. One was in the coop this morning, and an egg in the nest box. Hopefully they got the hint!!
