I have an almost two year old EE hen who loves to pig out over food all the time. About a year ago, her crop became huge and started to drag the ground. I called the chicken specialist at the University of Florida, whom I call when I don't know what is wrong with the girls, and he said that chickens that overeat, stretch the support structure in their crop and it is unable to go back to normal after a period of time. He called it pendulous crop and said that chickens can live out their lifetime with this disorder. Stickybutt ( she got that name when I found her with a fly catcher strip stuck to her butt ), has trouble digesting the big crop contents in a night time. I bring her into the house and put her in front of the TV in a cat bed while preparing her special treat of yogurt, green beans, bananas, oats and oil, which she usually eats. Tonight she didn't want the food and was constantly stretching her neck to move things around in her crop. I give her daily crop massages, and she ranges fine with all her sisters. When she gets to feeling really sluggish, I keep her separate in the rabbit hutch and only provide water for her. She usually feels better in a few days, and the crop reduces in size somewhat, but never is small like the other girls. She is a piggy with food, and cracked corn is her favorite. She will watch TV for hours and seems to protest when it is time to go back to the coop. I think if your chicken's crop went down to regular size, she is fine and doesn't have the same problems as Sticky's. It is so nice to see another person bringing her chicken inside for special nursing care. They love the attention, and we feel good about it too.

Handicappernurse....
Thanks for all your input !!! Appreciate it all. If my DH came home and found one of the "girls" sitting around watching TV I think he might really have me locked up ! Crop really didn't go down much..but will try not to stress out over it. For now !
Yes, now I know why I went to nursing school...so that in my old age I could administer to chickens !
Thanks everyone for all the assurances.
