my porr old cat has a very bad absess I called his vet and he is out of town and I dont know what to do we did drain the area already and boy was that the most nasty thing I have seen in a long time but anyways so I start searching where this infection was coming from and when i opened his mouth it was awful the smell wasnt as bad as the infection that drained out but it did smell like something dead and so i checked his teeth and sure enough his has a back tooth absessed but my question is what do i do until the vet gets back can i give him some pinacillian i have some 500 mg tabs and what can i give him for pain i know to keep it drained to keep the pressure off of it but you know it has to hurt and I feel so bad that i cant take him to get help now I hope someone here can help me

thanks everyone

see if you can call a vet and ask them what dosage for the penicillin (it will vary according to the weight of your cat), but do NOT NOT NOT GIVE ANYTHING YOU MIGHT HAVE AROUND YOUR HOUSE (like aspirin or Tylenol) FOR PAIN!!! Most human pain meds will kill a cat VERY quickly. If you have any BABY aspirin, you can give it ONE FOURTH (and absolutely NO MORE THAN ONE FOURTH) tablet every THIRD day. Any more than this and you can cause permanent liver damage.
ETA: I hope your fella comes through this and heals up fine.

I would use a syringe without the needle on it and flush out the infected area with warm salt water till you can get help. Do not give aspirin ! Wish I could tell you more.

Can you call a another vet? Maybe even if it's not close you can get dsome advice over the phone. Try a emergency animal hospital. Or maybe your local animal control would have a vet on standby.

Imp- Good luck

Acetaminophen (Tylenol), Ibuprofen and Aspirin r all toxic to cats. do NOT even use baby asprin it is not safe. i agree salt water rinses and cloves would be ur best and safest things to use. clove oil is great for pain relief for tooth problems we used to use that when we were little.
