Okay I have never seen an animal give birth before and my cat is in labor. She is having contractions and a bloody discharge, but no kitten yet. How long before her first kitten after contraction, this is her first litter.

I have never had any experience with cats in labor, but I am sending good thoughts to you. Keep us posted!!

I am just scard she was has strong contractions for about 40 mins and then they stoped. I have read on websites that cats go into seclusion before having them but Kitty came to me when they started. My DH says shes fine, so I am probley just being paranoid.

I have only been through this once because I get everybody spayed/neutered. The one time I went through it one of my rescues was already very preggers when I found her. She had the first 4 kittens soon after going into labor and then there was a several hour delay before the fifth came along. I had to gently help her get the sac off the 5th one because she was so thoroughly exhausted at that point (it was an all nighter for both she and I) that she was cleaning the sac off the kittten's back end while said kitten was gasping for air at the front end, still encased in the sac. So just watch for things like that. She was the best mommy in the world otherwise.

Mom and all her kids are spayed/neutered now. Spaying of the mom needs to wait until after the kittens are weaned.

Each situation is different from the next. Sometimes babies come one right after the other and sometimes there are hours in between. You might call a 24 hour animal hospital and tell them what you've observed and see what they say. It can be comforting to have that guidance. I understand how unsettling it can be to be going through it and wondering if all is well or if the mom needs help - sometimes they do and so it is great that you are asking.

I hope all goes well.

For those reading this who are interested in finding the most economical way to spay/neuter, Friends of Animals supplies discounted coupons for this. You can visit their website for more info. Girl kitties should be spayed at 6 months and the boys neutered at about 8 months. If one waits any longer, the girls can become pregnant at only 6 months of age. Spaying and neutering has many health benefits to the cats too - they are much less likely to get various cancers.

Each day 70,000 puppies and kittens are born in the United States. On each of those days 10,000 humans is born, so at that ratio, there will never be enough homes for the current number of puppies and kittens being born.

Still no kittens, this is nerve racking. She has placed herself under my bed where no one can get to her, so I just keep checking on her every little bit. Well I do plan on getting Kitty spayed, but I wanted her to have 1 litter of kittens first. She was a homeless cat I took in, and used to be completely be outside but I am letting her come in to have her kittens. I also have homes for the kittens if I can't convince my DH to let me keep them.

If your female came to you, this being her first litter, I would stay with her for companionship. She's nervous, and really doesn't know why she's going thru this or what this is she is going thru. You may need to help her if a kitten is being born backwards, my cat, Autumn, had one born backwards of her 5th litter (first kitten in this litter).

I had to help Autumn with her first and fifth litters. Stay with her and keep a close eye on each kitten born, watch for the mother helping each kitten to breathe by getting the birthsack off of it's head. I made that one mistake with Autumn's first litter, by thinking she was finished giving birth and I went to help my youngest with her school project and Autumn had 1 more and it suffocated with the sack on it's head.

Your female has come to you, so she is probably close to you. It would be like a close friend who is in labor, comes to you and wants you there for companionship. I'm praying she has a smooth labor/birthing of brand new kittens.

YOU WILL DO FINE AS HER BIRTHING COACH!

Once your cat starts pushing, she should have the first kitten within 30 minutes. If not, or if you see any frank bleeding, take her to the vet. A cat's uterus has two sides to it, so it's normal to produce 1-3 kittens, take a break, then produce the rest. Keep her hydrated throughout the labor and let her eat the sacs/placentas. It gives her nourishment.

Please spay her just as soon as the kittens are weaned, and encourage the people who take these kittens to have them spayed/neutered ASAP, before they give birth. There are literally millions of unwanted cats in this country, we don't need more.

calm down I've been there for lots of litters. I say if she has not given birth To any in a couple hours then realy start worrying. some cats just take a long time. And then don't worry if the Kittens take there time between each birth I've had offer 12 hours between kittens ( We thought she was done and then the next morning, or two...)
