New to chickens so please give me advice on what to do. We have already lost one hen. I have two hens acting sleepy all the time, not eating, making a rattling noise when they breath and have stuff running out of their nose. Picked up some Baytril at the vet today, she really did not know much about chickens. I have given the hens 1cc shot of Baytril. Will this help the cold? Can we still eat the eggs while on Baytril ? How long should I give them Baytril. Should I give it to the hens that are not sick yet?

Thanks for your help

are you in the US?

the dose for Baytril is 15mg/kg...

if in the US, you could have used Tylan 200 or 50..
available at most farm/feed/livestock supply in the livestock section.

Baytril will treat respiratory illness..it is a broad spectrum antibiotic.

but it would be a good idea if you gave them some plain active culture yogurt to help their systems..

you can also give 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar in the drinking water to help prevent fungal infection.

no, you should not eggs while they are on any antibiotic, and withdrawal for at least 2 weeks.
this is to prevent any allergic or other reaction to people who eat the eggs.

try and up their protein..cooked eggs, for example..(you can use their eggs)

you can also give Poly-vi-sol liquid baby vitamins (Enfamil brand..no iron)..2-3 drops once a day for a week or so..then taper off...

is there any chance they could also have cocci?
did the vet do a fecal float..(worm/protozoa test)?
please describe the droppings before you started the Baytril, if you can.

hope they get better.

yes, North Carolina

1cc of Baytril

I did not take my hen to the vet...just stopped by and talked with her...

what is cocci? it may be that if so how do I treat the flock?

the droppings looked normal.....dark color with some white

the active culture yogurt...I have heard that term before but never have understood exactly what is means...is it available in the grocery store? Is it just normal yogurt?

I have a chicken vitamin in their water

Thank you so much for your help

Some information on my hens

we have 10 grown hens
all purchased at a farmers market at different times in the last 4 months
have no idea what type of vaccines etc they have
they have a house at night but run free around the barn all day
with goats and horses

do I need to give my hens some vaccines?
my goal was little or no meds

if it is cocci will my horses and goats get infected?

looked up coryza, yes it could be that or cocci

anyway another hen is rattling so I took two to our vet yesterday
they know nothing about chickens
they called the tyson vet in our area he told me to put my whole flock on baytril oral for 5 days
will that help cocci or coryza?
they could not even tell me how long to leave the eggs
if we stop using the eggs will they hatch this time of year?
our rooster only has one leg so he has stopped breeding?
silly question I know but how often do they breed for the egg to be fertilized? daily?
if I can hatch the eggs I would like to, but I don't want to bring a new rooster in to a sick flock

any advice greatly appreciated

Thanks for the Chicken Doctor's number I will give him a call.

I reread the info on coryza....I have some of the symptoms but not all. My chickens do not have the bad smell with the nasal discharge. Pray it is not coryza...sounds like my flock is doomed.

Never knew chickens were so fragile

Some sites say to put oxine in the water to kill germs that spread in the water.
I think this is in regular clorox...is that right? And how much do you put.
