Hi.

I have a 5 month old chick, and I just discovered he has been hit in the eye. He is coping surprisingly well, still running around like a crazy thing, but he's losing weight. I don't want to take him out of the flock because the last time I did that for a sick chook they went nuts with loneliness. His 2 brothers are taking very good care of him.

Now his eye has a clear film over it. What does that mean?

Can I do anything for his eye? Is he in pain?

Thanks in advance.

A picture of the eye may help. Terramycin eye ointment or plain neosporin to the eye twice a day may help. Are you seeing the nictitating membrane (third eyelid) by chance? Do you see any foreign matter in the eye? Saline is good to use to flush out the eye if there is drainage.

I can't see a third eyelid. I clear out grass every day, he jumps out of the coop. There isn't any drainage, just a film over his eye. I think he might only be partially blind. Is that possible?

Sorry, I'm new.
