I noticed a few days ago that my silkie wasn't her normal self. She wasn't hanging with the other chicks and seemed to have a diminished appetite. Saturday morning I seperated her because I noticed that her crop was really full. After doing some research I realized she might have sour crop. I massaged her crop throughout the day and made her throw up several times. The smell was definately sour. Sunday she still had a large crop but I could not get her to throw up anymore. Her appetite is definately back and I have been giving her only soft food (crumbles made into a mush/yogurt/oatmeal with olive oil). She is acting like she feels a lot better, but her crop is still full and her poop still runny. This morning when I checked on her I noticed there were roundworms in her poop. Now I really don't know what to give her. I am afraid that if she has worms really bad that a dewormer might kill them and cause her to really be impacted. What should I do?

I'd worm her with Wazine first, followed by a broad-spectrum dewormer like Safeguard or Valbazen. Wazine only kills roundworms, so it won't overload her system all at once if she has other worms too.

Ok. Thanks! I will go to the feed store today and see what they've got. Could worms be the cause for the crop issues you think?

If she has so many worms that food can't get through that could cause her crop slow-down, so yes, worms could cause crop problems.

Get some liquid fenbendazole 10% (Safeguard), not Wazine (only gets roundworms), you'll find it in the cattle/goat section. If they don't have the liquid, get the horse paste.

Valbazen (albendazole) is another option, but many feedstores don't carry it and it's sort of pricey.

I picked up Wazine on my lunch break and have put it in all of my girls water. I see on the container that it should be drank within 24 hours. So do I give them their regular water again tomorrow or am I supposed to be mixing a new batch of medicated water everyday for a certain number of days? I will retreat in a couple of weeks with safeguard, but I just wanted to make sure I was using the Wazine correctly first. Thank you all so much for your input. I am new to this and appreciate all the help!

Dosage for wazine is one ounce wazine per one gallon of water. Put it out for 24 hours only, then discard. Then provide regular freshwater for your birds to drink. It's best to put the wazine treated water out for them before you let your birds out of the coop first thing in the morning. That's when they'll be thirstiest and will drink the treated water. Also, it must be their sole source of water to drink during the 24 hour period.

Hello @keller4511, my family and I are currently trying to treat one of our chickens with the exact same illnesses as yours. I wondered if your chicken survived after the treatment?
Thanks,
Chloe
