I need some help here please. I have lost 4 chicks this summer and this morning a 2 yr old hen.
The chicks were a couple of months old. Not all at once but over the coarse of the summer.
One day they are fine and then they sit all puffed up and listless. They then just slowly fade away.
I have had chickens for several years and I have never seen anything like this until this year.
There are no runny noses or goopy eyes. I have not lost any adult chickens other than the one
this morning and she was was my favorte. "Olivia" had a scissor beak but that never stopped her.
I saw her looking "Puffy" just a little bit yesterday and now this morning she is gone.
Everyone gets the same food and water. I also have ducks and geese. All are free range in
the daytime.
Has anyone else experienced this.
Thanks
Cindy

These symptoms sound to me like cocci. I would treat everyone straight away with corid.

More details are needed. How long did it take them to die from first onset of symptoms? Was there blood in their poop? What do you feed them? etc..

Sorry to hear this :( I lose a few as well, but nothing contagious. I raise a lot of birds - so it's a very low percentage. I have lost the most to crop impaction (silkie chicks ate bedding).

Thank you so much for the reply
I looked this up and someone posted pics of what their sick chick
looked like. THAT"S IT.
I read that while the chickens are being treated, you cannot eat the eggs.
How long can the eggs not be eaten?
Thanks again I will start treating today!

No egg withdrawal time according to this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/584258/corid-amprol-9-6-egg-withdrawal-time

I hope it helps. Let us know if it does. I'm hoping it will fix your issues without any more loss.

Anyone else showing any signs?

Well I just got some Corid at the Co-op.
The directions say 4oz to 50 gallons of water.
I think I want to mix it up 10 gallons at a time.
If I am breaking this down right, would 1/2oz
be about right and is 1/2oz the equivalent of
1Tablespoon? I do not want to over medicate
and kill them.
Thanks
Cindy

The great thing about Corid is that you really can't overdose them unless, you really, really do it wrong. I've never had to break down the liquid...is it 9.6% Corid? If so, the answer is all over this forum.

At 4 oz per 50 gallons that would be 4/5 an ounce per 10 gallons which is 24 ml or basically 1 tbsp + 2 tsp.

1 tbsp= 1/2 an ounce or 15 ml.
1 tsp= 1/6 an ounce, 5ml or 1/3 a tbsp
