Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I just wanted to pop in and say thank you to all of you who have been encouraging to me in keeping Mr. Chips my accidental cockerel.
His death has been more of a gut punch than seems reasonable for a creature I have really only started to get to know, but sometimes there is no logic to these things.
I felt the need to pull his story together in one place. Many of you will be familiar but in case not, here is the story of Mr. Chips.

Well RC, now you know. As you have learnt, I'm not completely mad in my love of roosters.:hugs
There is something about them that draws one into the dynamics of the group.:love

Indeed so!
The big question for me is whether I will purposefully introduce another one next time I get additional chickens.
I am still anxious because maybe I won’t be so lucky next time!

You could always go for straight run eggs and blame the odds should you get a male, or two.:lol:
I'll be interested to read what you decide.

Two uncomfortable hours. The wind has swung from the North to the West. The coop extension door faces West and the wind was like a cold knife.
They all came out again. They weren't waiting at the gate and didn't show any desire to go onto the field. They ate and foraged a bit in the extended run and then the freezing rain started. They retreated to under the coop and I to the coop extension. Couldn't blame them for not wanting to be out in such miserable conditions.

Food before roosting. They usually top up for the night and in the winter months I feed them in the coop extension.

Pushed the button on the auto door controller and the screen went dark:he.
Raining cold and standing in the wind getting dark. Need that like another hole in the head. I was lucky. Took the front off the unit and could see the Molex plug from the battery pack to the circuit board had come loose. It's never been one of the units strong points.
I spread the pins a little and once pushed back on the screen lit up.:celebrate
Hopefully it will work in the morning though looking at the weather forecast I can't see them being that upset being locked in the coop as long as I get there to feed them and let them out for a couple of hours in the afternoon.

Saw yet another post on Reddit where someone was having the "I really like this rooster but he's started showing aggression" problem. Comments were predictable, all either "kill him" or "put him in his place." At least a few pointed out that one shouldn't judge a rooster when he's that young.

I left my 2¢. Actually several paragraphs of my opinion. I hope it'll make a difference for that rooster, but the mainstream attitude towards roosters is frustrating me again. Maybe I need to grow a thicker skin, but if I can even get one person to give their rooster a chance, it would be worth it, right?

I'm once again really thankful for this thread, it's refreshing to get away from all of that.
