help, my chickens are pigs

A headless chicken! Must be very cheap to feed:lol:

I've got 66 chickens at the moment, 57 of them are mature, 47 are hens. I feed 1lb layer pellets in the morning with 3lb cracked corn. From 11:00 onwards they free range over a huge pasture with lots of greens etc. 14:00 they get another 3lb cracked corn and another 2lb at 18:00. I found if I feed them more than this the egg production drops. If I give layer pellets twice a day it doesn't make a difference, so I cut back. A farmer friend of mine used to over feed his hens and as soon as he cut back a bit they started laying more.
I'm not sure how the hens work it out, but it worked for us!

I couldn't resist!
Great idea with the feeder, but I'd need one about 30 feet long for my lot. Have to feed a few this side of the house, another one that side of the pen, the young roo's where the older roo's won't see and chase them... I'll keep it in mind for the chick pen though. I do have quite a few plastic pipes laying around doing nothing...

Awesome chicken feeder design. I wonder if there is some way for it to auto load though so it doesn't have to be pushed out into the main tube portion each day.

Interesting...our egg production dropped off recently...now you have me thinking. I have never used layer pellets, we just use a layer feed made by our feed mill. Something to think about for sure.

One question though, what do you do if you go away for the day?
