Help My dogs got out and killed my neighbors chickens....

If the OP were to be on here complaining about losing dogs multiple times to neighbors that keep shooting them, I'd agree with your comment. I read this as a one-time event. Things can happen, even with the best of circumstances. Sometimes a gate doesn't latch, or a child accidentally opens a door. So many things can happen. To me, it seems that the OP is understanding as to why the dogs were killed and wants to make up for the dead chickens.

Doesn't sound so lucky since the chickens got killed before he could shoot the dogs.

To the OP: I'm sorry for your loss. It sounds like you care about your relationship with your neighbor. That's important, since short of moving away, you have to live next to this person. I have one neighbor, who is very awesome, and I would hate to have anything cause friction between us.

As a dog and chicken lover, I can guess how upset you would be about this whole thing.

Wow, you are definitely being fair to them. They can buy new laying hens for way less than $40 unless they're some special breed. I applaud you for taking responsibility, and I'm sorry about your dogs.

You are being a very good neighbor and such a sad story. I feel for both you and your neighbor. I love all animals but I remember one time some dogs came on our property and chased our chickens as I was coming up the drive in my car. I just saw red and started chasing the dogs with the car. Totally lost it. Fortunately for all of us, the dogs escaped unharmed, and so did the chickens, minus some feathers. I would have felt terrible if I had killed them, but would have felt worse if they'd destroyed our flock. The dogs never came back, either. We were told by our county warden that we are fully entitled to kill dogs who come on our property and chase or kill livestock. Also, that we can be reimbursed by the county, for lost birds, in the event that happens...but only if our own dogs are licensed. The reimbursement from the county was not much, as I remember. You are being more than fair and I agree, you can't always control situations, sometimes things just happen, like your dogs getting loose, despite your best efforts. The neighbor doesn't "need" to do anything. The fault is not the neighbor's. They can do whatever they like. The dogs came on their property...not the other way around.
