This morning I went out to look at my chickens and saw that my Plymouth Rock Joleen was limping! I didn't see her fall or hurt herself yesterday, but I noticed that she was favoring her leg when I put her in for the evening. she looks healthy and alert, and her leg doesn't feel broken, but it hurts her whenever I touch it. Could it be sprained? Twisted? Inflamed? Any advice helps. (She's resting it a lot, so that's good)

When you "tag" someone as I did here, they will get a notification about the post in which they're tagged. You don't have to do anything. They're pretty responsive and knowledgeable. Good luck!
Thanks, LizGio. I've been here for a while, but I'm still figuring things out on BYC.

Those are bat signals to us educators.

Have you looked closely for faint greenish bruising on her leg? Since she reacts to manipulating her leg, it points more to injury than a pathological cause. If you see bruising, that would confirm injury. Soaking in Epsom salts can increase circulation and hasten healing.

You can also give her a "baby" 81 grain aspirin twice a day by mouth for pain and inflammation.

In case you see no bruising, you might assume another cause of the limping. Sometimes it can be heat related. (Providing us with your location assists in this.) Giving electrolytes can help ease the symptoms.

Bacterial infection can also cause this. But it usually would be accompanied by watery, poop with mucous. An antibiotic would be called for in this case to fight the infection. Penicillin and amoxicillin are both useful meds in this instance.

I didn't find any greenish bruising on her leg, but I noticed that her hock was inflamed. What do I do to help her? Will Epsom salt work?
