My hen fell from the stairs last week, but it was from a small height, though. She seemed to be in pain for a bit, but afterwards, she was okay. She was eating and showing enthusiasm, playing around too. But for the last three days, she seems listless and lethargic, not showing any interest in the food we frequently give her, so I changed her diet to something new. She seemed to eat the food then. But she still seemed to be lethargic. Today, she was losing her balance slightly and was breathing from her mouth when I held her. What do you think is wrong with her? What should I do? She is not that old too...

What were you feeding before, and what does she eat now? Do you have a commercial balanced chicken feed available there? Are your other chickens acting normally? Is it very hot there? What is her age? Does she lay eggs?

It sounds like lingering shock from the fall complicated by heat stress. Give her lukewarm water, one cup with one teaspoon sugar and a pinch of salt and baking soda. Dip her beak to show her it's a sweet treat. If she can't or won't drink, you'll need to syringe or tube it into her crop.

After she perks up a bit, give her a soft boiled egg to give her appetite a jump start.

I fed her cabbages, grains and vegetables before but now I feed her the commercial balanced chicken feed. The weather is a mix of both rain and sun. She is about 4 - 5 years old. No she dont lay eggs. She hasn't laid eggs all her life.

Thankyou for the reply but today she seemed to be limping and losing her balance. She is almost sitting while eating.

Are you giving her B-complex every day? Vitamin E should also be given. One whole oil capsule per day popped right into her beak. Feed her a little egg each day following the pill. Continue the sugar water. Dehydration and low blood sugar also cause these symptoms along with nerve injury.

Thankyou for your reply.. I will give it a try and see

How old is she? It is hard to know if she may have some sort of reproductive disorder since she has never laid eggs, suffering a vitamin or mineral deficiency, or if she is showing signs of Mareks disease. Using the vitamin E and BComplex might help. Let us know how she gets along.
