Help....my hen is pecking herself to death......

Thank you for your advice. As strange as this may sound....I think the self pecking was brought on by her first eggs....which showed up the other night....one was normal....the other jelly egg. I'm now not sure if she was egg bound or just weirded out by the fact it was first egg(s). Anyway she's doing much better this morning and with the help of a saddle i hope to reintroduce her to her coop mates tomorrow. Wish me luck. Thanks again to everyone.

Glad to hear she is improving.

The shell-less egg is most likely due to her being so young, but make sure that your girls have access to oyster shell free choice. They will take what they need.

If the wound is still that large and open, if you do place her back with the flock, check it at least once a day if not more. You want to keep it as clean as possible and make sure flies are not getting on it. This can cause Fly Strike where flies lay eggs in a wound and maggots start to eat the flesh.

You may want to consider keeping separated until she heals a bit more or pen he in a dog kennel inside the run (if it's covered) this way she still sees the other member, but their less chance that she will be picked on. If the others do see that wound, they will most likely picke/peck at it -even to the point of killing her.

Just my thoughts.

Thank you so much. I put her in a dog kennel inside the coop but she lost her ever loving mind and I was afraid the stress alone would kill her. A friend of mine gave me a chicken saddle. I put it on and turned her loose. She's been doing great ever since. Thank you again to everyone who helped.

I'm glad to hear she is doing well.
Make sure you continue to check the wound under the saddle to ensure that it is healing and not getting infected.

Thanks for the update, keep us posted.

OMG... drying and healing so nicely. I've been checking it every other day. I recommend a saddle to anyone having issues like hers. Kind of a chore to put on if they are squirmy but the result is worth it.
