Hello all!! I have a sweet hen mix that is sick...we received her a few weeks ago and she was laying healthy brown eggs. I'm adding photos to help troubleshoot- this is the feed we began giving to her and her eggs began to get soft every day.. Often they are broken before I can retrieve them or extremely fragile. I tried adding oyster shells, but that wasn't part of her diet before so getting her to eat them is extremely challenging. Instead I've been scrambling eggs with oregano and toasting eggshells for her and I changed her feed to an egg Maxx that has added calcium. Since these efforts I have seen small signs of improvement ossacionally then another soft, broken egg. Yesterday I noticed a patch where feathers seem missing(?) And she was laying in the yard isolated and lethargic. She wouldn't eat yesterday and below her vent is very dirty. Her stools have a white paste in them and have looked unusual. She's making a very weak sound so I have her in isolation and tried adding electrolytes. Please help!!

It sounds like she is having some reproductive issues, possibly from a calcium deficiency, or a problem with her oviduct and shell gland. I have also seen an injured hen stop laying hard shell eggs, and then who laid soft eggs from then on. She could also have an infection or tumor, but this can be a common issue. Try giving her some human calcium such as Calcium citrate with vitamin D or Caltrate. Tums is good as well with a little cooked egg. After a few days, hopefully her shells will be harder. If she has infection, then some may use amoxicillin or Fish Mox to treat it. Clean up her bottom in a bucket of warm soapy water and then dry her off. Flies can lay eggs in poop around vents and sometimes cause flystrike. Try to get her eating some moist feed, cooked egg, and other nutritious food.
