I thought that the mother of this hen was eating her feathers so i gave the mom away. It's been 5 months. My girl is growing a few feathers but her neck is almost raw with just a few feathers sticking out. She's laying 5 eggs/week. Seems happy - not itchy. She takes dust baths frequently. Lots of room to roam around. I'm feeding her on Feather Fixer pellets and oyster shells. She gets a lot of sunflower seeds from flowers in my garden. Greens from kale and grass in their pen. Not sure what to do with her. She used to be gorgeous and now sooo ugly. Worried about winter with minimal feathers.

No rooster. I gave away this 1 year old's mama cuz she was eating the feathers off this babe in the early spring and now wonder if the other babe (from the same batch) has taken up the habit. So now what do i do??? I will go to the feed store tomorrow and see if there is some kind of nasty tasting salve i can put on her to keep this from happening.

Feather Fixer feed will not magically 'fix' feathers....it's just a higher protein layer feed(18% protein, 3-4% calcium).
Cut out all the other foods/treats, they are diluting the nutrients in the layer feed.
Feather picking can be a bad and ongoing habit,
usually caused/started by lack of nutrients and/or crowding.

How big is the coop and run, in feet by feet?
Dimensions and pics would help here.
How many birds total?
Are all birds having this feathering issue, or just her?

Depluming mites are a possibility too......some funky looking feathers on the body.
Have you ever used a wormer? That can cause feather growth issues.

Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

Not sure how to reply to the questions above - maybe it's "aart"?
I am in Spokane, WA. We've had some 100 degree weather lately but this condition has been going on since March. The mom of these two hens was definitely eating the feathers off the two girls's backs (both hatched May 2019). She looked like she was just grooming them but i did see her eating them. I got rid of the mom and the red hen's feathers grew back but this one has never recovered. I never see the red hen picking on her but wondered if she's doing it at night on the roost. Two roosts 30" long. I have 3 new girls Just hatched this May. the new ones look fine altho the older hens chase them around alot. Yard is over 30 feet long. I'll try to attach a few photos. I wish i knew if the babes were hens. I'd give the older ones away but they are giving me nice eggs about a dozen a week from the two of them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
