HELP!!! My hens got attacked!!!!

Yes, i think your hen got away with a less serious injury. Glad you are helping her mend. I would be curious to hear how she does when you re-introduce her to the flock. Don't you think they will pick on her? That is my concern. My hen used to be one of the dominant ones. I wonder if chickens remember each other if they have not seen each other for months?
Thanks for your response. Good luck with yours too!

I've used some aloe vera gel on a hen that had been attacked by dog..It was more open than on the picture. I was cleaning it twice daily with some natural marseille soap, and then drying it with a gauze and applying aloe vera gel...She got better within a month. However, I had a hen attacked by a fox and the whole skin from the back down to the leg was missing( the muscles were naked), and she had a puncture wound underneath the wing that got infected. The vet opened the puncture wound, to clean it, got her some pain killer, antibiotic, and silverdene cream....It was not healing, but was not getting worse.and the infection was under control. So the vet tried some golden powder that I was mixing with aloe vera gel, and it healed despite all the odds ( the gap between both sides of the skin was huge). It took about 4 or 5 months to heal. We were tube feeding her with some harrison bird recovery food.
Chickens are usually good healers for wounds like that.

I'm hoping I don't have to use Blu-Kote. I'm gonna give her a week or so in isolation and see how she looks. Hopefully they won't peck

Oh no! That sounds like a ton of work but worth it. I'm hoping she heals up quickly

Sounds like a very serious wound Cajun chicken. My vet believes that the laser treatments are helping much with the healing. Glad to hear that chickens are able to heal such drastic wounds. Thanks for your feedback.

No problem. At first, I think I overreacted a little, but this was my first time dealing with this kind of thing. Im going to continue to clean with betadine and use neosporin like most people have suggested. My vet did offer to stitch her up bit she reminded me that my 5 dollar chickens would now be a 100 dollar chicken lol. I would have done that but she talked me out of it and told me it should heal up nicely with betadine and neosporin

Well, I wish my vet had recommended an alternative, since I am retired on a fixed income and my chicken is now worth $448 with one visit remaining. She has healed up enough as of today, to be allowed back in with the flock. He firmly believes that the laser treatment was responsible for the quick healing. So tomorrow, I will re-introduce her to the other six, and hope that they won't pick on her healing back. Having her in the house for the past month, tending to her feeding fastidiously, has made me very attached to her.

Was she down and out at the beginning? (in shock) Or was she handling it well? Did she have a fever with the infection? I was happy to hear today that my girl can be released from captivity. She has healed pretty well in a month, thank goodness....but to the tune of nearly $500. Yikes! I would not want to wish this on anyone!

I'm glad to hear that your chicken is doing better, even if it was a huge ordeal. I love my birds and would do the same as you.

Yeah you have yourself an expensive chicken...but they are part of the family and im glad you were able to save her. My hen was acting totally normal, not in shock that I could tell.
