:welcome and good luck with your poultry adventure! :frow Its probably to late, should look for a new home or get the soup pot ready. You could maybe try separating him from his girls for a couple weeks and see if the aggression continues when he has nobody to defend? none of the roosters i have really pay much attention to me, so i cant say I've been in this situation yet...knock on wood. Hope that helps :/

soup or stew, your choice. Dump him. There are too many good roosters looking for homes to have to worry about a mean one attacking you. If you go to "Where am I, where are
you" thread you can find your state thread and post on there. You may find other people offering up roosters they need to rehome - that aren't meanies.

Once you have 20 posts you can participate in the byc Buy-sell-trade forum - there is also animals looking for new homes where they are low cost or free. Sometimes you can get very good quality roosters because it seems like every place is banning them.

I hope you find another rooster, they don't have to be mean to be a good protector for a flock.

My rooster is mean too. I bought a handled fish net. I walked into my coop with the net, and a cage. I caught my rooster. Once caught, I gently pushed down on his back until he submitted, and was calm, then I removed the net, still holding onto him, and put him into the cage. When I left the coop, I held him, put him on the ground, and pushed him down until he submitted and, and was calm. Then I released him. He walked over to his ladies. I left the coop. After repeating this a few times, my rooster sees the net, and gets out of my way. A couple times a week, when I have to do things that don't permit me to keep the net in hand, I simply catch, cage, then release. He's gotten used to it to some degree, so it's fairly easy, and not very stressful for either of us. I first tried the holding him while in the coop method, but it's just too darned hot right now, and it would overheat, and stress him too much. This works for us, and I don't have to rehome him, or send him to freezer camp.

I just gave away 2 of my 3 roosters this morning. When I ordered them from Meyer, I ordered 15 hens and a rooster. Turns out I got 3 roosters. At 14 weeks they were really starting to challenge each other and even chasing the girls around. I didn't want to see any of them get hurt, and I figured by the time the hens started laying, the roosters would be terrorizing them. I found somebody through Freecycle who wants to raise them. I had a heck of a time trying to get hold of them. Then, I remembered a "chicken hook" I saw in a catalog. So, I made one out of a smooth piece of metal, attached it to a stick of wood, and was able to catch the two roosters by the upper leg. I then held them down until they were calm...one of a time of course. So, now they have a new home, and already my one remaining rooster seems to be strutting taller and "talking" more.
