I didn't mean anything by my previous post. I only ment around here we don't even have an animal control. Heck our township isn't even associated with any humane societys/pounds. If you end up calling the "Constable" (no cops either) he then calls a local farmer to come and get the animal. This farmer holds said animal in his barn for a maxium of 72 hours(if he likes the animal/it's not aggressive towards him it will get food and water during that time, if not the animal goes without. Then puts the animal down. I didn't know where the OP was from (didn't really think around here), but was just voicing my opinion or even a suggestion. Hope I didn't offend anyone...

Oh and I wasn't at all offended Run-a-Muck, I'm just worried poor HH who is doing the best they can in a weird situation for them was getting bombarded with too much (including by ME I might say). Poor thing! Crazy rooster on their porch, all kinds of stuff from us about what to do, what not to do...

hehe... I too hope for the best outcome, but under the circumstances, I wanted to reassure that it might be ok too!!

I'm very sorry if I sounded offended or defensive, I didn't mean to.

lol I'm so intent on finding out what is going to happen with this poor roo that I am putting off my way to long list of things to do today. HH if there is anything I can do feel free to let me know and I will see if I can help. Of couse that kinda depends on just how far you live from me to lol. But we can cross that bridge later if need be. Can anyone tell I have a soft spot for roos

thanks again for all the replies! the rooster disappeared right after i posted, and i must assume he went to our neighbors to the north (he was abandoned by our southern neighbors). anyhow, the neighbors to the north are pretty well-off, homesteader-types, and are probably better equipped to deal with him on short notice. thanks all for educating me, and i'll keep in mind that raising chickens is always an option. i'll give it some thought... i do like eggs, but i don't like killing things.

(i'm down in Bloomington, BTW)

Thanks for the update!! I admit to wondering and hoping all went well for you both.

Do keep in mind the possabilities of keeping a few chickens! They are really fun and nice to have in small managable numbers. Rarely smelly or nasty unless ignored or neglected, but with just enough for personal use, very very fun and cool to have puttering around the yard. No need to kill layers as a rule, possibly if injured badly, but not a normal thing. They live pretty long and though they lay best the first couple years, they continue longer than that, if only in smaller numbers.
