1) What type of bird , age and weight? Golden Pheasant, 1 1/2 yrs., don't know.
2) What is the behavior, exactly? Not eating/drinking, can't walk, laying on side, actually calm.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? About half a day?
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma? No.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation? It is POURING here and he was soaked.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all? No.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. Normal.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? None.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? Treat myself.
11) Describe the housing/bedding in use. Ground, 3 walls, and a brooder.

Please help him!!

Oh my goodness...sounds like Neuro. Maybe virus? Watch the others of course...could be bacterial but..at this point they can mimic each other. Do you have any meds? Even holistic?

My Golden pheasant is acting the same (cann't walk, head seams alert, ok) my other pheasants seam to be ok. Did you find out what was wrong with your Golden pheasant?

My pheasant just started showing similar symptoms this morning. I went out to check on the six of them and found him laying on his side with his head twisted up and back, kicking his legs and unable to move. I picked him up and he didn’t chirp or struggle much (other than kicking his legs) but I couldn’t find any sign of an injury. When I stand him up to walk (while steadying him with my hand) his weight pulls him back and he walks backward in an attempt to keep himself upright, but when I let go he immediately falls and flips over. He is able to move both of his legs but seems to keep the left one stiffer. He closes his eyes while laying down but opens them if he hears me or if I touch him. He is 14 weeks old. Is this ataxia?

I got him to drink a bit of electrolyte water that I mixed up real quick, but only if I dipped his beak in it myself; he didn’t do it on his own. I added some water to his gamebird crumbles food, and he seemed excited about that because he ate it by himself (while I held him up) when I put it in front of him. I put it in his cage right in front of where he was laying and he was still able to eat more so I left it in there.

Could he have a head injury? His symptoms sound like a neurological problem, and those can be from viruses, head injury, or vitamin deficiency. Moldy feed might also be a possibility. What is your general location? Has there been any outbreaks of Newcastles virus or avian influenza near your location? You could check with your state vet lab on Monday, just to ask. I would start some human vitamin E 400 IU and 1/4 tablet of human vitamin B complex daily, given in some food. We have a pheasant forum here under forums above where you may get more advice.

It’s possible that he has a head injury… he and his siblings all tend to pick on each other a bit and occasionally draw a bit of blood (I immediately quarantine when this happens), but I don’t think there’s any problems beneath the skin. I live in Phoenix, AZ. There has not been any outbreaks anywhere near me lately. I’m very careful when feeding my birds and never give them feed that looks or smells abnormal, so I don’t think it’s that. I guess I might try some of the vitamins, but I’m just not sure if he’ll even survive long enough for me to get them. Thanks for your advice, I appreciate it.
