We recently discovered that our two month old pullet is blind. She constantly runs into things, pecks the air, and acts confused. She often stays in the roost most of the day, and when she does come out she is often left behind by her two friends because she can’t keep up. Even worse, we are having problems with our older flock bullying the pullets when they are free ranging(they have separate coops right now.) My poor blind pullet get pecked and scratched whenever they are free ranged because she can’t see them coming or anywhere to escape. We had to set up a run not to keep the pullets in, but the big hens out! When they have supervised time free ranging, she often finds a bush or plant to burrow into and hide, and she refuses to come out because she is so terrified of the big hens. She likes to be held though, and her friends are getting better at staying by her. What do I do with her? How do I integrate her? Is there a cure for chicken blindness? I feel very sorry for her.

her she is with her friends, she is the white one to the far right

She may have a Vitamin A deficiency which can cause deterioration of the retinas of the eyes. More symptoms would be crusty eyes and nostrils, & loss of balance.

Thank you for the info. She don’t seem to be showing any of the 3 symptoms you listed, but it’s still possible. How do you treat it? How much does it cost? Where do you get the treatment from? Can it hurt the chicken if it turns out she doesn’t have it but still took the meds?

You can just simply get Save A Chick vitamins, Durvet Vitamins, or Nutridrench to add to the water. They all contain Vitamin A.
You can use which ever you can get.

I also have a blind 8 week old pullet. You can read about my continuing story here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/precious-the-blind-barred-rock-hen.1372916/

It’s a journey. There are still so many unknowns, but everyday just adds to the story. Mine is doing fine though. It’s heartbreaking, but it is all they know, and we are just there to help give them a better life than they otherwise might have.
