I'm hoping someone can help me help my little girl! My almost 4 month old silkie hen was hurt today. I think she may have gotten run over by a mini mule while trying to avoid the rooster. I didn't see it but found her in the mini mules paddock laying on her side very still! I picked her up and she seemed to be in shock so I put her in the coop where it was quiet, warm and safe. Checked on her after about 30 min and she at least had her eyes open and she could stand, although she didn't want to walk. I put her back in the coop to rest. Tried to give her some cantaloupe about 2 hrs later and she wouldn't even try to eat it....she loves cantaloupe! Brought her out of the coop alittle while later to sit in the grass ad hopefully walk around alittle and she just sat there. Being she's very low in the pecking order and I didn't want her to get hurt by the others I brought her inside with me. I can't get her to eat or drink! I syringe fed her some Vit E and water with electrolytes and probiotic. She fought me so she didn't get a lot, will try again in a bit. When she lays down her head droops forward and she pulls it back up...like a person who's dozing off while sitting up. Is there anything else I can do for her?? Should I just let her rest and say a prayer?? Please any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!!!!

Sorry about your silkie pullet. Can you see any injuries on her? Look at her skin, and feel around for any poofy areas, or abrasions or bruises. She may just be dehydrated or weak from being kept from food and water or the heat. She is still at the age for coccidiosis, which is treated with Corid (amprollium) in the water. The symptoms of coccidiosis are sleepiness, standing puffed up or hunched over, not wanting to eat, and diarrhea (sometimes with blood.) Was she vaccinated for Mareks disease? Mareks can cause weakness or paralysis of one or both legs, wings or drooping of the neck. I hope she will get better. Can you try to dip her beak into the water or hold a small cup up to her to drink as often as you can. Adding water to a small amount of chicken feed, chopped egg, canned tuna, and liver are some things that chickens adore and will eat. Please let us know how she is doing tomorrow. Good luck with her.

Thank you for all your info! She was completely normal when I put her out today, well normal for her. I believe she was pecked to hard in the head about a month ago by the roo who been trying to mate with her...she's been acting a but lost since then. I named her Dory since she acted like that character. She did however come to me whenever I called her and has been eating like a piglet. She was eating after I put her out and then went and laid down to avoid the roo. This is why I believe she was injured, especially being I found her in the mule pen. I'm going to continue to syringe feed her water and Rey to get her to eat...and say a prayer for her! :(
