Can someone please help me convince her that it's okay for the girls to have fun table scraps?

Everything in moderation right?!View attachment 2498991
Moderation yes. Probably should have put a few of those pieces in the freezer to treat them again at a later date.
I have no issues with you giving your chickens some goodies - not any worse than those who keep a scrap bucket or compost, imho.

I've given mine bits of pizza, some bread ends, etc. sparingly and haven't found it to be a problem.

I think they will be o.k.

OMG lol:eek:That is a lot of pizza! Hopefully this will be one of those situations where everyone is okay, but even so I would not do this again even in a much smaller quantity. Your wife is right, this is not suitable food for chickens. As others have already pointed out dairy can cause diarrhea, and all that fat and salt in one sitting is not good either.

Have you heard about making chickens fermented feed? That is an easy treat you can prepare for them that is not only fun but beneficial.... mine go nuts and have a field day! There is even an article right now on the front page of this site on how to do it.

No moderation to be seen where your photo is concerned. You dished up as if you were "treating" at least 60 hens.

They will get a nasty diarrhea to say the least.

Ha! You got me on that one :D

We're vegetarians so the girls pretty much just get veggie scraps, rationed out in small quantities, but the neighbors brought over left over pizza New Years day so I thought why not let the girls party too??

:wee

I just started fermenting feed for my chickens this week (after reading the article). Super easy and they LOVE it! They have 24/7 access to their regular feed, but they think of the fermented stuff as a treat!
My husband slipped a piece of pizza in the scraps last week and a few of the chickens did get diarrhea, must of been the ones who ate the most of it! 😊

My chickens rarely get leftover pizza because there's rarely leftover pizza....
But they did Subway on Tuesday...

(My chickens eat and enjoy all leftovers all the time, I just have to remove the leftover from any styrofoam containers because they eat that, too. Every Sunday night the 2 refrigerators in the control room at work get emptied out and goes in a bucket for my chickens. The only things they don't eat are iceberg lettuce, raw onions, lemons & limes and some pickles.)(I am not saying it's healthy but I've never seen one with issues from it.)

Waste not want not, right?

... but why not iceberg lettuce? Is that bad for them??

We throw all of our table scraps (all foods not eaten) outside. My chickens do eat what ever they want from the scrap pile. I have never had an issue with them getting sick because of it. I also see them eat a few bites (no longer than 5ish minutes at the location the latest stuff was dumped out at) then they move on. Most of that stuff is eaten by the critters that come out at night.

(before anyone says anything about dumping table scraps outside. We have to store our garbage and take it to a dump ourselves. So we don't dump food in the trash. )
