Help! Mysterious predator

It was probably a weasel or rat. I wanted to let you know that you materials choice is also vulnerable to attack from foxes. Chicken wire is great at keeping things in, but lousy at keeping predators out.

X2 chicken wire is great for a lot of things. Keeping predators out is not one of them.
 
In addition to previous comments, I would add that the photos appear to indicate that you used a staple gun? Doesn't cut it. The lumber you used would handle small fence staples. Unfortunately, if you aren't adept with a hammer, you will likely hit a finger a time or two, as they are tricky to work with. Try holding them with needle nose pliers if necessary.
Another point, wrap the hardware cloth around the corners, rather than cutting it. The fewer cuts, the fewer points of entry.
