Help, need more info. on how to treat. sore on butt with maggots

I have read through past posts and have a good ideas from that but that was in 09! Does anyone have a better way now.

This hen was found with a half dollar sore (maybe bigger now ) last night with maggots in it. I cleaned it with soap & water tried getting the maggots out put antibatierical stuff on it and some DE and put her in a separate cage.

Now it's morning and she and the rest are freaked out me included, I feel bad but need to get this done! Any advise while I'm getting dressed would help. I have a general idea but need to go to the pharmacy for myself anf get more betadine for her.

I've actually heard that hairspray kills maggots.

I'd call your local vet just for an idea. My vet will give free advice over the phone.

I have had the same issue. I used screw worm paste from TSC and it worked awesome at killing them after i plucked out every one that i could get my tweezers on. They have to be suffocated.

I used neosporin for an emergency until i could get this stuff. make sure there's no pain killer stuff in the neosporin! or vaseline just until i could get home and cake the swat on. It worked great.

Just called my little local farmsupply (we are all wine here) and they have it! Did you clean the wound good and with what? I read to throw everything you could at it, ie: rubbing alchohol peroxide and make sure all of the maggots are gone and then bring her inside so no more flies can get on her?

She is the low bird on the poll so they pick on her bad! She freaked out that she's in a cage now!

cover the cage with a towel or blanket on three sides so it is darker. Like if she were in an over grown nest box. That may calm her down a little. I did clean the wound out really really well. I used soap and warm water to clean the original wound, then used and antibacterial. had to trim away some skin that the maggots had gotten under to get to them. I have heard of people using the peroxide and stuff to get in to them inside the wound. I did not have to as mine were right on the skin layer and within a shallow wound. I just opened the darn thing up and picked each one out. Then cleaned like I said with Dawn and warm water, then used betadine solution, the neo and swat. (I am sure someone will chime in on here about the other stuff to clean the wound out.) then slathered on the swat- gooped it on. you can use the clear kind. NOT the blue one or it will be really gross looking. They also have it unscented. thank heavens. I was able to leave the wound open and not cover it while it healed. the others did no peck at it, but i think most will if it's noticable to them. the Swat will also keep any other flys off of them in the healing process.
