She was still tough to catch...my son and his friends spent about 20 minutes chasing her around the front porch until she was corralled in the blackberry vines. Once I grabbed her she (Lightning) was quite docile and had no problem being held/handled. She was so happy to be back in the coop with her mates!! Truth be told, we all were. My main concern about her being outdoors was her safety as I have dogs and other neighborhood dogs show up on occassion. Last year I lost 30 birds to attack by 4 dogs, 2 of which were mine. This morning she was under our porch where my 2 dogs sleep, and they never touched her! GOOD BOYS!!

Here are my son and friend working to get the hen...

...and the others after she was caught (not happy with the pose at the end by friend). Son holding Lightning

LOL, best picture ever...

but i hope they weren't chasing her around with those rakes and such...

the coat hanger wire would've been a quick grab... they are jumpy around us humans, but not a thin metal wire...

Thanks, gumbii, but I was not happy with my son's friend "posing" as he did but I guess I should have taken a second shot. They used the rake and other implements to try and coax her to be captured by the "chicken hook/stick/catcher". They were under my supervision cause they would run after the hen and Lightning would...guess what?...RUN!! I had to remember they were inexperienced in tracking animals. But it was all good in the end and the bird was safely returned to her coop.

Oh, that's wonderful! I'm really happy for you.

Maybe start training your chickens to come to you when you have a special treat. They learn to recognize the treat container, as well as you calling them. It won't help once they've gone to roost, but is an easy way to catch them during the day. It's always good to be able to lure them into the run when you need to. Mine can't resist hulled sunflower seeds and that is my "go to" treat for an emergency bribe.
