Hi all this is my first time using this forum. I have a 3yr old peahen who has three peachicks coming up to five months old. She has done a fantastic job, but now seems under the weather. Her head is low, she cannot hold her wings up and seems to drag her feet when walking. My husband says she’s looking to lay new eggs, but this seems too soon and she certainly isn’t looking for a spot to drop eggs. I live in rural Turkey and the vets here are not the best, let alone with peafowl. Any help would be much appreciated.

She sounds sick. Have you checked to see if she has a crop issue? Impaction or yeast. What does her poop look like? It could provide clues. Post a photo of it here.

Possible causes of your peahen not feeling well: crop issue, coccidiosis, worms, reproductive infection.

Her poop is quite white more like urine then poop. I will post a picture tomorrow as it’s dark here now. Unlike last night, she did not eat or fly up to her perch. I have moved her to an enclosed coup with straw bedding as she felt cold when I picked her up. She has had her vaccines recently and the peacock and 3 chicks seem fine at the moment. Many thanks for your response, much appreciated.

Worms, or blackhead are the most likely problems. Get pics of both her and close up of her poo. Give her a heat lamp for now, 85* or warmer is good for sick birds. See if you can find metronidazole for blackhead and albendazole for worms.
I was just reading about Blackhead, it does sound like that could be the case. I will load pictures first thing tomorrow and see if I can get some medication. Many thanks for responding.

Welcome to BYC, sorry your peahen is ill. :hugs Can you bring her inside where it's warm, 80-85 degrees f is ideal.

Many thanks for the warm welcome. Yes, she does look like that I’m afraid. We did bring her inside earlier today but she did not like it, as she was away from the babies... well they are 5 months now. I can’t seem to find any info on how you treat the tract infection.

What sort of drugs can you get in Turkey? If she were mine I would treat her for the most common things that peafowl get, blackhead, coccidiosis, worms, E.coli. Each condition requires a different medication. I would also give her fluids. How do you feel about learning how to tube feed?

Not sure, the vets here really only deal in cats and dogs. I also have a rooster showing the same symptoms, didn’t eat or leave his coup yesterday... and his my biggest eater and hen chaser. It’s very cold here with frost on the ground. I brought my peahen inside, so temperature of 82 in the house. She did eat some green yesterday. My property is an acre in size so she had grass and clover, but still lifeless this morning .
