Just a thought as to the cause of the wound -- one of our friends was having a problem with his chickens actually getting killed, but only the heads were being eaten. As it turns out, it was an owl that was attacking his flock. So, have either of you noticed any owls around?

All winter I had a snowy that would actually sit on the coop waiting for the girls. But she's headed back north to my knowledge. I have had owls go after my ducks in the past though. Definitely a possibility!

Definitely! Well... I'm kinda torn about this, b/c I think owls are really cool birds, but you don't want them hunting your chickens.... If it were me (now knowing that owls may kill my chickies), if I saw an owl hanging out by, or sitting on our coop, I would probably shoot it in the chest/torso area with a BB. From a little distance (i.e. across the yard) it should only sting it badly, but not truly hurt it. Hopefully it wouldn't take more than a couple of those to scare it away from hunting there.

I used chlorohexedine the vet gave me. It is diluted to a light blue color.
Also, Silver sufaldine worked wonders for my bird that was attacked.
