Well it's 4.40 am Sunday morning and I finally got my second chick (blue silkie) - 1st chick was born around 3.45 pm yesterday - 3 others are pipped - how slow going this has been - I'm shattered - dare not go to bed cos everyone (including manufacturer of bator) say watch out for humidity and remove caps if it rises too much - well mine is still regular at 65% - guess it may be cos they are so staggered - anyway I'm not complaining - I'm feeling really lucky, especially after reading some of your tragic stories - and if I'm honest I have been catnapping during the night, in fact it was only the first little fella singing his head off that woke me, when I peeked in the bator he was pecking away at the egg that was hatching, I was a little worried that he may peck the new chick when it came - but no - as soon as it emerged he stood back and just watched.
I have one question now - when do you think I should take out the first chick and put him in the brooder - he's all nicely fluffed up and I'm thinking he may be getting hungry or thirsty.
Thanx so much everyone for your support!
