HELP!! New chick questions!!

I wanted them all, I went there as a ride to a friend. I knew what they were for. I still live at home and in the city. I looked it up and the city I live in only allows 4 chickens. So I will be getting 3 more. I thank you for your help and I will put pics up soon. I went out and bought a waterer, heat lamp, and food. I spent almost $40 to set her up

She is comfy now and will have friends tomorrow. Four lives saved, and not in a snakes belly

I have also been reading all night since I got her. I want to be a good chicken mom

You will do great. The chicks will help you too...watch them for behavior changes...for heat, eating and such. Now would also be a good time to start planning for and designing your coop. Tons os help here for that too.

I have a 6'h X 7' w X 13' long dog run, that I was thinking of making into a chicken run with some work. Would that be okay for four chickens? It has a huge dog house in it about 4' x 4'. What flooring is best for the coop?

Just a grassy area, floor of the coop, plywood, then someting covering it to keep it from getting soaked, I put pine chips on mine, plywood, old linoleum then chips.

Might want to cover the run with wire. Keep the birds from flying the coop

While you are there, ask if they know what breed they are.

Also just something to consider, half of them will probably be roosters. You might want to get an extra one, unless you plan to keep the roosters too.

That run sounds good with some reinforcing and predator protecting.

Floor...plywood and linoleum or something easy to clean then a layer of pin shavings...a door that can be closed at night or in bad weather...a roost and you should be good to go.

Oh and make sure the top of the run is covered to stop flying predators and the chickens getting out.

Congrats on your animal rescue! I would have had to get some too! I ordered 10 chicks from my local feed store and I get them May16th! Until then I will be reading here like mad!

My TSC got chicks yesterday. I wanted to go and DH was like "No way, wait for the 10 you ordered. Maybe in another year you can order more if all goes well."

Bad memories!!!

When I was five our family went to a feed store and I came home with a "pet" baby chick which I bought for a quarter. Imagine my horror when a couple days later my uncle scooped it up and had me and my brothers watch as he stuck it in with his snake. It did make a neat lump, but...

I need to go rock in a corner now.
