We just recently got a new chick, about 2 weeks old. She is black with white spots. She took to me right away, and she is just so precious. However, last week one of our hens, just had two babies and we thought that she would latch onto this new one. But she immediately attacked it when it got too close. we put her in a cage, but she got out and when I found her she was walking around but all the other hens just ignored her. I wouldn't worry so much if one of the hens would protect her, but they don't. What should I do? Is it because I held her? I am just worried. Is she old enough to be outside?

make a brooder and keep her inside with a heat lamp

2 weeks is too little to be outside if she's not being adopted by a hen or under a heat lamp...

I doubt it has anything to do with you holding it...

First off, Welcome to BYC.

Hens usually won't adopt another chick not their own unless it's new and within hours of the others hatching.

As the previous poster stated, you'll need to put it into a brooder and keep it warm with lots of clean water and starter mash available.

When you put this chick in a brooder (here's a pic of ours, was EASY PEASY to make in a few minutes...literally 15 mintues!)

add a stuffed animal or feather duster as a friend, they don't like being alone, but if they have to a snuggly friend is nice and helpful.

...along with medicated chick starter food and water...and a heat lamp (at 2 weeks old I'm guessing 80 degrees is good)
