I have been trying to do an incubation project with my students and this month has been a bad month for building maintenance. We have had a water main burst and had all our water and plumbing turned off for weeks, which means no boiler to heat the building! Our temps inside the incubator have gotten down to 95-97 a couple of times and our eggs look like they are 4-5 days behind in development. Today should be day 18 and I would put them into lock down but they just don't look ready. What are the downsides of locking down early? I currently have them in an automatic egg turner. Should I take them out of that and raise humidity as best I can and just hope for the best? Can they wait to go into lock down until Monday if they look days behind?? Will they get ruined somehow if I do take them out of the egg turner before they're ready?! HELP!

I would like to see some candling pictures and are they chicken eggs?
What kind of incubator do you have?

lock down but they just don't look ready. What are the downsides of locking down early? There are none. At this point turning the eggs is not so important. I currently have them in an automatic egg turner. Should I take them out of that and raise humidity as best I can and just hope for the best? I leave the turner in and hope for the best; so far so good. Can they wait to go into lock down until Monday if they look days behind??Lock down now. A few days off will not matter. The low temps may weaken the embryos. Are you sure the eggs are still viable? Will they get ruined somehow if I do take them out of the egg turner before they're ready?!Removing the turner will not hurt the eggs. HELP![/QUOTE]

I did this project many times with my students (6-8). The last time the kids made there own incubator. The eggs hatched.

Good luck.

Thank you! I just candled them again and they are still moving around in there. I think when I candled yesterday afternoon the one I did may have been in a weird position, letting more light through, because when I checked them again they look more like they're only a day or so behind. I do hope they wait until students are there on Monday to hatch. I've never set an incubator where I couldn't baby it and because of the necessary building repairs, and asbestos, we wont be able to go into the building over the weekend.
