Help! One chick died, one is stuck? Cheeping heard inside.

Well, just in case one of you were wondering what happened...One chick was out this AM, but it looked weak and damp, the mama stepped on it when I was trying to see it, so I determined to myself to NOT look again all day. I fear my disturbing her may have squished the chick. Over-all, we really did everything wrong. I thought it would all happen naturally...well i guess it would have if my hubby had just left well enough alone. Anyway, i will check tomorrow to see if any survived. I sure hope so.

I hope some of your chicks survive.
It sounds as though your hen was a first-timer, is that the case?
Should you decide to do another hatch (shipped or locally purchased eggs....or have a free-to-good home or borrowed rooster), she will be a lot wiser on the next hatch,

Good Luck,

Don't give up just yet. All chicks look damp and weak when they first hatch. They spend most of their first 24 hours sleeping. If it can't hold up its head at all, then you worry. Chicks get stepped on all the time by their moms, they're usually ok. When you find a dead chick that looks squashed, it usually got squashed from being sat on after it died. Relax, let mom take care of them, and check again this evening if she lets you. If not, let her be and check again in the morning. I think you'll get some survivors. If not, don't beat yourself up over it.
