Help. One of my chicks had a deadly intestine prolapse.

Does anyone know if this is contagious or what may have caused it? He looked great right up until his insides became his outsides. I have 19 other chicks that I want to try to help.

We incubated them from eggs from Carolina Biological. Most were hatched on the 21st, a few the next day and two on the 23rd. The later ones had difficulties--seemed to have trouble completely pulling in their yolk.

I've just not found much on this topic anywhere. Any information would be helpful.

Jami,
Here's a recent thread that may help answer questions.

Graphic description warning.

Thanks, Imp. He was newly hatched. Maybe two days old. This poor guy had loops and loops of bloody intestine sticking out. He died fairly quickly. I probably would have culled him if he hadn't. Poor thing. I was just wondering if there was something that I did that can cause this. Or if it's contagious.

Jami,
I'm not an expert on health questions, but this sounds like a hatching problem (deformity) not prolapse. Probably a good thing as someone on the thread suggested the prolapse can be the result of cocci.

Sorry you lost the chick

Thanks. I hope you're right. My heart will break if I lose them all to something nasty.

Just bumping in hopes that someone has some experience with this. I've got another wimpy baby and just want to help him. Thanx.
