Help one of my hen's is limp!

She might be eggbound...
Has she pooped? What did it look like?
Try putting her in a warm bath...that may relax the muscles so that she can pass the soft shelled egg easier. Then make sure that she's dried off completely. And make sure she's warm...
I would'nt flush her nose with anything NOr try to force feed her...you're more likely to cause more problems than cure them...
Antibiotics shouldn't be given without a cause.

Well, She died this morning. I couldn't get her to drink or eat. This is the second one I lost this week. I am thinking they got into some poison oats we had upstairs in our old shop.

This sucks big time. Thanks for all the advice you guys gave me. I have blocked the upstairs so they can't get up there.

chickenranchwife......I am so sorry you lost your hen. Poison oats?? What are those for....rats/mice? Glad you blocked off that problem, but I would be worried "vermin" would crry those oats down. Be carefull! Again, so sorry for your loss.

I came back in to check on how your hen was doing and saw that you lost her. I am so sorry. :aww I hope you can figure out what's happening, so you don't lose anymore. It is so sad to lose our feathered friends. My thoughts are with you.

Thanks Jody and Justusnac, We will concour this through prayer. The poison oats are old so not sure that is really the problem but as soon as I can get hubby's help I will have him help remove them. I think they used it for prairie dogs. It's a good thing I got 56 chicks to look on the bright side of things. They are all doing good.

I know it would not do any good if poison is the problem, but my son and I force-fed an almost dead chicken who had been attacked by the dog - she could not stand, open her eyes or hold her neck up. We used a 3cc syringe like you use for shots without the needle and mixed a capsule of blue green algae (high nutrient supplement) with 3 tablespoons of water and gave her that-mixing it with water from canned tuna when available. She got about 10-18 cc 3x a day which was enough to help her heal. We had to force feed her about 2 weeks before she was able to hold her neck up and start eating for herself. She also had to go through being kicked out of the flock and treated badly by the other chickens for a few months but a year later she is back in her pecking order as before the event. I say force-feeding is a very realistic alternative given certain circumstances. She never fought us though she never voluntarily opened her beak. We gave her 3cc at a time so she could swallow it easily and not be afraid of choking. The syringe lets you get it deep inside the mouth. We tilted her head up like they do when they drink.
