Help!!!! Opened incubated egg too soon! Chick's still alive?!?

kitkat, this is up to you - but i would like to see you make a member page about what you have been through with these chicks. i would also include the dollhouse pictures they are just to cute! as things progress or change you can update the page - it could be a good place to point other people who have similar problems.

Kitkat2498--those are the cutest pictures ever inside their own little people house. You could name chick #2-- "Insomnia" for keeping you awake and worried for days.Lynn Marie

Their "carpet" gets changed out every couple of hours. Man,do they poo a lot! lol I'm thinking about changing to shavings...may be a bit easier to keep clean

If you do switch to shavings, make sure to get aspen. Pine and cedar are toxic except in extremely well-ventilated situations and even then, the aromatic oils are still respiratory irritants. There are also products (that will be beside shavings in any pet store) that are made from recycled paper and quite soft as well as absorbent.

Loved this thread, read the whole thing... I ESPECIALLY love what you did to their house! Maybe with all that extra visual stimulation and the 3d environment, you'll wind up with more intelligent chickens!:woot

I think pine is pretty standard, but I do agree with you about cedar. After about a week or two, she may get tired of changing the paper towels! I know I am happy when they are old enough to switch over to shavings and won't try to eat them anymore.

I thought I was fancy giving my chicks cat toys and marbles to "play" with, but this is certainly a whole new level.

I found pine flakes at TSC.... They are bigger than the shavings, and the chicks that I have didn't try to eat them at all!
