Our local cat population must have declined (or been moved), as the chipmunks here have gone overboard in their reproduction.
I've since learned that once removed, another will simply take their place until you've exhausted the local population (nearly) entirely.
That said, we've been using a snap rat trap (the plastic no-touch kind) with peanut butter with great success. We've sent literally 31 chippies off to 'freezer' camp just this past summer season alone. They started to invade our 1932 barn - nope, not any more! Husband used a long piece of wire to attach the trap to a wall (via a screw and washer) - and just leaves it. A few hours later, we've got another 'camper' in our freezer for the garbage man to take on Thursdays.
We've not caught anyone for several weeks, although I see them scampering off through our gardens and patio spaces. So either they've learned to avoid the trap, or the population in the barn is gone.
We decided the 'dunk tank' method was too cruel, as they can swim and do swim until drowned. At least the snap trap is quick and in our hearts more humane. And they go for it. Silly chippy.
