Help? Over tread hen, graphic pics, you've been warned! (update 1/1/11

Having been in the same situation as you are, I know how you feel!!

You are doing a good job. Just keep her separated unti she heals, just so he doesn't rip it open and she doesn't get infected. Being a young roo, he will likely calm down, but in the mean time, look up chicken apron or jackets (you can search on here, a few BYC'ers make them). It is a little jacket that goes over her back and side, so when he mounts, it won't tear her up. Especially since her feathers won't all come back until she molts.

Oh, and with neosporin, if you use an off brand that has a pain killer in it, make sure it doesn't have any -caine's in it (like lidocaine, benzocaine, etc). They are toxic to chickens. Neosporin uses something else for a pain killer so no worries with that brand. Regular triples with out antibiotics are fine, it is only the pain killer ones that you need to check first.

And I have just the opposite I went to put everyone up and noticed my youngest roo JW looked like he had frost bite on his waddles so I brought him in and looked him over good and it looks like the girls have been working him over his wattles where bleeding and raw there pretty big for the size of him he's bantam, anyway I cleaned all the blood off and put bluekote on it and put him back out there, so I just hope he'll be okay.

What a hoot DKbeads! I brought my roo in for the past two nights, because he was being picked on my my big, fat, mean turkey, but I did not think maybe he would become house spoiled. hahahahaha. He's been on the front porch CROWING all day long. I love the visual of your chicken trying to cuddle up to the cat(s). Don't think my cat would be happy with this. Last night, I had both dogs, the cat, and my roo (Larry) inside all night, and everybody just slept and behaved themselves. Amazing!

We had a little sex link hen that I wish I had taken a picture of when she had a similar wound. DH didnt notice it until it had started to heal. One area of it was about 3/4 inch deep and was just a crater with the tissue gone. DH brought her here to recouperate. Her wing covered it so we only separated her from the other chickens for a couple of days. To make the long story shorter, she is fine and all we did was move her here to the house and away from the other roo. The wound closed completely and the feathers have even grown back. Chickens are amazing healers. If nothing else, just keep her clean and dry with food and water and away from the other chickens.

Oh, and chicken soup is really good this time of the year. We just got rid of our roo today! Finally...

Update:
It's been two weeks and here's where we are at wound wise, she just had a bath to help pull off the loose scabbing on her back that's been bothering her:

So far so good, the deeper wound on her backside there is taking a bit to heal but it looks good, the scabbing is starting to loosen on the edges where the salve is penetrating the most, no sign of infection at all. Hoping once the skin finishes healing it'll go back to black in color! She's still living in the kitchen, laying eggs just fine and generally loving being a house chicken.

As for Junior and the other 2 silkie cockerels (we thought they were girls until this week when they crowed
hmm.png
) they are no longer here to bother the girls and I'm now silkie-less until after we get moved.

I don't care how good the sex was, it ain't worth all that!
She is looking a whole lot better

And now we are down to a blind cockerel and a really, really, really timid cockerel (Neo's offspring, Elvis) who just got moved into the adult pen so I'm not thinking there's going to be any of that going on for a while!
