Not sure how it happened just noticed my Buff Orp 2yrs old had a bloody face, then I noticed that the back of her comb was partially pulled away from her scalp, must have caught it in the fencing and somehow yanked it, slicing it right across the bottom. I isolated her today and she seems ok, the bloody area has sealed over. But her comb is floppy and I'm worried about it. Can this cause a major problem since part of it is now not connected to anything, about 3/4 inch of it is just dangling. Any thoughts?

I don't think it is a big problem, but gotta say I don't know for sure. There are people who dub (remove) the comb. Can you post a pix?

That happend to one of my roo's when he fought with another roo. Clean it up a bit put some neosporin on it and leave it alone. It will heal up and her comb will rise back up when she is healed. Just make sure the others don't peck at her or you will have to keep her by herself for a while. Good luck

This is what the comb looks like. It's hard to get a chicken to stay still.

I used neosporin on the wound, its looks black possibly due to the chicken putting it head in dirt. Hope the comb will be OK as is.

You could cut the loose comb off, yes it will bleed. But with it loose like that, just a matter of time before she get it caught on something again.

That's the exact same injury my roo had. Except his wouldn't stop bleeding. I cut the hanging part off. He didn't even seem to feel it and it healed completely in a few days. Stopped bleeding right away.

I never figured out what caused his. He wasn't in a fenced area when it happened, but it was a very clean cut, like it was done with a knife.

The only thing I could come up with was maybe a hawk tried to grab him and just got the comb. He had a small cut on the back of his head in addition to the comb injury.

He is a big boy and had a huge comb. I've never witnessed him stick his head through any of the fences and he doesn't fight with any of the other roos. It's a mystery.
