I candled it today. I have not seen it move in a few days. What can I do? Is it alive? My first duck egg. Was given to me by my niece she didn't think anything would happen but the baby has been growing great and moving until about 2 days ago.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Can anyone say what went wrong with the baby duck?

I'm assuming this was a mallard type?
so this was day 29, the pictures were taken? That indicates that the baby passed away during day 27, when he stopped moving? It looks quite underdeveloped for 27 days, what was the temperature at?
How was the baby positioned in the egg? It's impossible to tell from the photos. Was the beak up by the air cell membrane, or was it upside down/malpositioned?
What was the humidity during lockdown?
How often was the egg turned?
All factors, more information would definitely help us make a guess at why he didn't make it.
I'm very sorry for your loss! 😔

38 Celsius 65% humidity. Forced air incubater with automatic turning. Duckling was turned towards air cell but with head under its wing. I locked down at 25 days. Candled before and he was moving checked the egg through the window he was moving the egg then all of a sudden nothing. I hope this helps you to help me figure out what I did wrong.
Thank you for all and any advice.

Do you know how old the eggs were before being set in the incubator? How often was the egg turned during incubation, I take it 65% was during lockdown, what was the humidity during the early stage of incubation?
Hopefully we can figure it out!
It can be down to so many things but it's always good to have an idea of what it might have been, that way we can try to prevent it next time!
I know how heartbreaking it is to lose them when they're so close to hatching!

I think 38 is a bit high for a forced air, but I don't think this would have been the reason, as he would have developed faster, rather than slower.
Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think I'm correct in saying that. Did you use a calibrated thermometer/multiple thermometers to check the accuracy of the temp? And did you mark one side of the egg to ensure the incubator turned it correctly?

The egg was a day old but the duck kept laying them in the snow. We were surprised when anything happened. It was an unexpected happy occurrence. We had chicken eggs already in the incubater but none of them did anything at all. That was a crazy story in its own. !
55% humidity before lock down. The temperature didn't change much. 37C-38 (98.6F - 100.4). The incubater is set to turn the eggs on its own, which it was. This is my incubater box.
Thanks again for helping me work through this.

humidity was slightly on the higher end during incubation, but I don't think that is what caused the death-
did you use a therometer to check the temp of the incubator was correct?
And did you draw a line or mark on one side od the egg to ensure the incubator turned it correctly?
Incubators are often inaccurate so it's important to keep a close eye.
Eggs can be surprising! My two ducks were hatched from store bought eggs, they were chilled before I bought them, but of 12 eggs, three developed, one died and 2 hatched!
