I quote rescued chickens because apparently, that’s what I’ve done with these poor things!! I acquired chickens on September 12, 6 total. The man was supposed to give me 5 (Different)certain chickens but gave 6 totally random breeds/gender. One of the roosters he gave me is pitiful looking it makes me want to cry. I think he’s a silkie/jap fantail mix. Old enough to mate. All of his rear end feathers look to be gnarled to no end, & it’s revealing a VERY red bottom of his. I checked them for mites, which of course, they ALL have. Can anybody tell me what’s going on with the roosters bottom? It’s very red & raw. What do I need to do for him to help soothe & heal him??AND is this red coloring normal on his legs? Or not? I’m so beside myself right now I can’t even think straight. I just bathed him so he’s wet in the pics.

I don't think the red on his leg is normal. His bottom is most likely red and missing feathers from the mites which means hes had mites for quite some time. You could put diaper cream on his bottom.
I put some neosporin & desitin on his bottom. Poor baby 😭 he’s such a good boy, there’s no telling what he’s gone through. All I know is that from the pics I got, he was living in a small cage with 2 other Cochins inside of a shed. I’m gonna get him back to 100 if possible.

Report the man who sold them/gave them to you. That’s NOT okay and those aren’t normal wounds at all
Agreed, that is basically chicken abuse! Do you know what product to get for the mites? It seems like you do, but I just wan to make sure who yo buy a product, do not buy this! IT contains gasoline, and smells terrible! It is totally toxic, and I would never buy this again! I would suggest the martins permethrin, or the permethrin from tractor supply. I also like the permethrin dust on amazon though! Keep doing the neosporin on the red areas, and Vetrycin plus, and help promote feature growth, and heal th eaffrected areas. Keep up the good work, Avery

Just being out of the cage will do wonders for that poor boy! Was there poo stuck to his leg feathers before you bathed him? Could be scalding from waste on his legs.. or any number of other things. That's one lucky rooster to get out of there and into your care!

Agreed! You did a fantastic job! I also agree, that the red eggs and bum, looks like i twas coursed form sitting in poop, or poop being stuck to them. Good job, Avery

That’s what I told my husband! I said that this is animal abuse! I will be finding out how to report this man & his wife, just because they’re birds, doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to be loved & to be living their best life! I will grab some of that. I’ve also made them a dust bath area, hopefully they will figure out how to use it. All of them have been getting fresh fruits & veggies a couple times a day. I’ve put them in a baby gate outside with some grass. My other flock LOVE fruits, veggies & clovers & other various types of weeds/grass. When I first offered these new littles some of the same foods, they were scared of it like they’ve never seen it before.... but now when they see me carrying some bowls... they know they’re about to get some goodies. Thank you, I’m doing whatever I can. I’ll get some pics of what his feathers look like. He’s mainly got the silkie texture.

Call animal control, they will set things right. Just make sure when you buypermethrin, if it is a concentrate, read the directions on it so you can dilute it, otherwise, it will give them chemical burn. I learned that the hard way. And absolutely do not bath them until they are healthy again, or else they can no regulate there body temps, and it will give them hypothermia, and you will have to dry them off with a hair dryer, and put them in a warm room until they are warm again. I learned that the hard way too. Good job saving them!
